SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - Hats in western South Dakota are going off to cowboys.
The city of Spearfish is celebrating National Day of the American Cowboy with weekend-long events, including a performance Friday by R.J. Vandygriff. The Texas native became a Nashville recording artist and later appeared in the Chuck Norris TV show "Walker, Texas Ranger."
Festivities continue through Sunday at the High Plains Western Heritage Center.
The national recognition honors cowboys and cowgirls for their pioneering spirit. Organizers of the event say it'll help people discover their "inner cowboys."
Items owned by Rodeo Historical Society Hall of Famer Russ Madison will be on display Saturday. Organizers say the display hasn't been presented publicly before and covers the region's rodeo from the 1880s to the 1960s.
